Well Field Day 2003 is over and done with. The conditions were just awful! But what can you do it's mother nature. Weather wasn't that bad, but the mosquitoes were! :)

My attempt at wiring up the Field Day grounds ending up being a flop! I guess what can you expect when your trying to do everything last minute. The big suppress was that the laptops didn't have there own Ethernet connection. So off I was running around trying to find a docking station. So there was a lot of driving back and forth between my home/other hams homes and the Field Day grounds.

So might as well take advantage of the moment and do some WarDriving, we did have two apace just as you drive into the grounds but couldn't 'see' them from the parking area. Either way it was a fun time and of course like every year, I end up learning something new. So next year I'll be better prepared.

So whats next you ask? Well one thing that I have been wanted to try out has been to setup a meshbox, or a AP using a PC with Linux. I have looked around at a few options and have found one that runs off a bootable CD (much like Knoppix-STD), and the others either require some funky hardware or my AP isn't supported. The access point, well not really a AP, but a 802.11b USB device(COMPAQ iPAQ 11Mbps 802.11b Wireless USB Adapter Card). Now if I could get others in my area to do the same we could have a rocking Wireless community! Like the folks in New York Wireless(So anyone in Brampton, Ontario? email me). Share the net access or how about Become a wireless ISP: for 682.675 CAD/502.262 USD but I believe it could be done for less then $682 Cdn. The opportunities are out there, I know a friend of mine, is sharing his 3megabit DSL with his neighbour of over WiFi, they split the cost, and I'm SURE he is willing to do the same with his other neighbours, if it drops his monthly highspeed costs why not :)

So what distro's are there? Well the one that I believe will work well with my setup is MeshBox. If I could find a decent deal on a real AP, I would to try doing PoE, why? Well it's easy enough to run Cat5 Cable up into the attic or even a TV tower(of course with the weather proof box). The reason why this would be the best option is that: (a) Cat5 is CHEAP!, (b) high grade coax for use up in the 2.4Ghz is EXPENSIVE! Plus you can't have long runs of it. Using Cat5 it's easy to run 200ft without a problem up to the roof.

Some of the other links I found were:

Oppps!!! I just realized that I had the wrong email address!! it should have been YAHOO.CA _NOT_ YAHOO.COM.

So fire away those emails that have been bouncing!!

Once again sorry about the screwup.

Here it is, delayed once again, and this time the reason is that I FINALLY was able to get a full copy of Knoppix-STD, I will say it's a AWESOME bootable CD, it's still in beta but I will easily give it TWO BIG thumbs up. It can ONLY get better. It really has some useful applications for security admins, and well other folks.

Here it is BIQUAD PICTURES

The copper wire(the antenna) will be redone this weekend. As you will notice one side it neat the other, well, screwed up. I was trying something different and just ended up making a mess. But it works.

Sorry I haven't posted anything for the past day or so. I've been busy with the little one at night(my 1yr daughter), and last night I had a race(Sailing, on Lake Ontario, it was one heck of a ride, wind was blowing a good 24 knots (44Km/h), but we won. Second boat was 45seconds slower.

I'll post those photos of my BiQuad tonight, I promise :)

Please send me a message let me know what you think about this blog. I know people are visiting the site, would love to know what you think.

Cya.

Tonight while watching The Screen Savers on TechTV, Kevin Rose aka Dark Tipper demonstrated a new(at least for me) distro based on Knoppix Linux distro, which is a awesome bootable Linux distro on CD. You don't need to install this Linux version. Place the CD into the drive, set your system to boot off the CD and you have a full feature Linux distribution.

Alright back to what Kevin demo'ed(Article). There is a distro called Knoppix STD, this is THE bootable CD any security administrator needs(or even WarDriver). As I write this blog the Knoppix-STD homepage is down due to the ./ effect the site has exceeded their monthly bandwidth. So instead of me retype the description Check out Google's cached pages for Knoppix-STD

The really nice thing about this distro is that it comes with patched orinoco drivers!! So for those who have wanted to play around with Linux and don't have experience with compiling or patching drivers this is the perfect setup. From what I have been able to fine this CD is JUST LOADED with network and security tools.

If and when I'm able to find a copy of this ISO I'll play around with it and write up a review.

Sorry I haven't posted any photos. I ended up getting sidetracked last night. But I did have a few minutes to try the experimentation with the satellite dish, but I will say I was really disappointed with the results. I'll have to spend a little more time with playing around with the dish before I call this experiment a total write off.

The initial test showed that the AP in my area I've been using to test the signal strength. With JUST the BiQuad I was able to get a maximum signal of about 11-12 SNR. Compared to 16-17 SNR with the satellite dish. I was expecting a little more then just 17 SNR. Again I'll have to spend abit more time placing the BiQuad at the right focal point.

But over all I'm still REALLY impressed with the performance using the BiQuad on it's own. Go ahead and build one. Have any questions email me. (Link on the top left corner).

Beginning one that loves to build antennas and electronics, it's just natural for me to thinker with building stuff, and since the only really thing you can build for WiFi are antennas(yes I know there are amps) I decided to play around with a new antenna design. One thing that prompted me to get going on this antenna, was last week I received a used StarChoice Antenna, and based on the details I found on Trevor Marshall's website I figured the same could be done with the StarChoice dish. So the first step was to build the 'feedhorn' I went ahead and built the BiQuad with the little wings. I didn't use copper but aluminium, why? Well I was at the Home Depot(gotta love that place for antenna parts :) ) and noticed they had a 24" x 8" sheet for $3.50(all prices are Canadian). So that was the perfect price.

The initial test of just using the BiQuad as a stand along antenna showed that this little thing is VERY promising possibilities! A few weeks back I built a Cantenna but the BiQuad preformed better. Atleast in the initial tests is did almost 27% better!!

I'll post pictures later tonight. I just forgot to download them from the camera. I'll also post some pictures of my cantenna as well...

So anyone into a Antenna shootout?! :)

This is just one of those Priceless articles you find on the net.
All this lawsuit with SCO and IBM is just driving me nuts.
Funny enough SCO (or caldera) was fine distributing the kernel before.

But this article is so well done, it should be a nice wakeup call to SCO,
hopefully other open source authors do the same.

Linux kernel coder puts SCO on notice

Want to see what sites people are surfing? Well at least the pictures(gifs/jpg/png....)
Try DriftNet

Nice application for those are conferences were WiFi is used, check to see what sites your colleagues are
surfing. :)

Alright since this is my first entry into the blog I'm just going to start dumping tons of links and info I've found lately and not so lately until I can get into the flow of it.

A lot of the tools I might direct you to will only have a Linux version. Just happens that Linux does have better tools for networking, of course I'll try and keep things
as cheap as possible, like as in FREE.
