![]() ![]() So whats next you ask? Well one thing that I have been wanted to try out has been to setup a meshbox, or a AP using a PC with Linux. I have looked around at a few options and have found one that runs off a bootable CD (much like Knoppix-STD), and the others either require some funky hardware or my AP isn't supported. The access point, well not really a AP, but a 802.11b USB device(COMPAQ iPAQ 11Mbps 802.11b Wireless USB Adapter Card). Now if I could get others in my area to do the same we could have a rocking Wireless community! Like the folks in New York Wireless(So anyone in Brampton, Ontario? email me). Share the net access or how about Become a wireless ISP: for 682.675 CAD/502.262 USD but I believe it could be done for less then $682 Cdn. The opportunities are out there, I know a friend of mine, is sharing his 3megabit DSL with his neighbour of over WiFi, they split the cost, and I'm SURE he is willing to do the same with his other neighbours, if it drops his monthly highspeed costs why not :) So what distro's are there? Well the one that I believe will work well with my setup is MeshBox. If I could find a decent deal on a real AP, I would to try doing PoE, why? Well it's easy enough to run Cat5 Cable up into the attic or even a TV tower(of course with the weather proof box). The reason why this would be the best option is that: (a) Cat5 is CHEAP!, (b) high grade coax for use up in the 2.4Ghz is EXPENSIVE! Plus you can't have long runs of it. Using Cat5 it's easy to run 200ft without a problem up to the roof.
