To makeup for some lost time how about a "COOL APP OF THE DAY!" . While at work today I was looking for a free unzip application on Webattack and I happen to stumble onto this sweet little application. It's called AdvancedRemoteInfo(remote PC information) testing it on the local companies network I quit surprise to see how much detail it was able to pull out from those machines. Such as OS running and even app that are installed.

How does it work? Well not getting into details. You enter IP into the address field and click FULL SCAN. It goes out find things such as: Mac Address/OS/CPU Type/Remote Time/ User name currently logged on.....
It lists all running process(and you can kill them as well!!!), some of the other information it's able to list are services that are currently running, and software that has been installed...

Of course it's freeware..

Well that's about it for today. Enjoy. If you have a interesting application please let me know. Also email me your thoughts about this application. CYA!

As you can see there hasn't been many updates. It's just been a bad week, the little one(my 15 month old daughter) as been ill and I've been under the weather as well, and then I had out of town visitors staying with me. Hopefully this week when things calm down little more I'll get back into the flow of things once again.

It's going to be a quiet week. Either Tuesday morning or Wednesday I'll try the comparison with Netstumbler and Kismet once again, hopefully the new version of Kismet I built this weekend is a little more stable then the previous version I was using.
No GPS data will be captured, not this time around(unless I get a chance to complete the setup at work in the next day or so). But the HTML output will give you all a pretty good idea on the different between both applications.

I have a few applications I have been player around with. I'll try and write up a quick review.

I'll also be placing some of my favorite links on the left side of this page, and yes I'll try and figure out why the Archive links aren't showing up the way they should.

Until then, enjoy.....

Email me and let me know what you think. Thanks!

As promised I tried doing that comparison with Netstumbler and Kismet, but(there are always a but). I had some problems with Kismet on the way to work. It seemed to keep hanging and stop logging AP's. So when it was safe, I would cancel Kismet and restart it. But I must of missed a few AP's, since I wasn't sure at what point Kismet hung. But I was able to capture a bit, the results are HERE(Don't bother to click on any of the AP's links, since they will fail)

The other problem I encountered and wasn't expecting is that there is no way to export Netstumbler to a HTML file. I'll keep trying to find a method so that the results of Kismet and Netstumbler can be compared side-by-side.

So the results were 68 for Kismet and 40 for Netstumbler. I know I must have missed a few with Kismet hanging. I'll try again next week, I downloaded and compiled the latest version of Kismet, my version was a little out of date. Hopefully the latest version resolves those problems.

Alright here it is, the $20Cdn($15 US) GPS. I've taken a few photos, sorry about some of them being a little out of focus I don't have a tripod. As I've written before, this GPS is the same one found in some of GM's vehicles with the OnStar system. The units are manufactured by Motorola(they are the Microsoft of the electronics world). They love to have their own proprietary standards, GOOD luck trying to get any information from them unless you give up any of your future children and their future children. You might think this is funny, but trust me, I know what I speak of.

Lets get to those photos.

* Top side of the GPS: GPS1
* Bottom Side: GPS2
* Side by Side comparison to a stick of SDRAM: GPS3 nice and small.
* The unit needs a interface to convert the data coming out of the GPS into RS232(serial port) format: Interface1
* This interface was built at work since we have a milling machine to cut the board: Interface2
* Putting it all together, this photo is of the GPS and RS232 interface placed together: Piggyback
* You might have have noticed there isn't a LCD display or a external antenna. The LCD display isn't a issue since the computer is the LCD display, there are tons of applications(in a future blog I'll post a few links to those applications) out there to interface the output of the GPS into a human visual format. The Antenna was easy to get, at my workplace we develop products that use GPS devices and we had some extra Antenna1/Antenna2 laying around, so lucky me I was able to grab one.

Out of the box this GPS kicks into Motorolas own format instead of using the world wide known standard of NMEA. Most if not all GPS applications I've used are expecting NMEA format. Before using any applications be it NetStumbler or anything else, a small windows application that switches the Motorola GPS into the NMEA is used. The Source Code found at this site.

Later this week, I hope to have it all in box and all pretty :) One thing I'm planning on doing as well, is have my Thinkpad 770x powered off the vehicles 12v power. This will also clean up the passenger side of the car, that way I don't have to cart with me a Power Inverter. Photos will be taken once it's all ready to go.

I'm still planning to do the comparison of NetStumbler and Kismet this Friday. So keep on coming back to this blog.

Enjoy folks.

Now that I'm back in the big smoke recovering for a BRUTAL weekend camping. I'm talking about crappy weather, it was none stop rain Thursday on the way to Kingston(3 hrs from Toronto) to group up with the two fellows in the group(Matt, Mike). We left Kingston at 5am to head to the camp site(2 hr drive) and again RAIN. Btw, if you want to know where I went your going to have to email me. This place it totally awesome, out of the way, but only about 4 hrs. From Toronto, compared to 3.5 hrs. to Algonquin Park and A LOT and I do mean A LOT less crowded. Algonquin is nice but EVERYONE goes there. This place was clean and quite, it is a major fishing hole. Most people we did see up there were fishing in powerboats but most of the time they were trolling with electric motors. The lake is massive and you can move around for a LONG time without having to Portage the canoe. Friday was RAIN and more rain and it was cold, felt like the fall, the wind was blowing like stink. I only wish I had a video camera(oh sorry no pics. I forgot the Digital camera :-( ) I was looking towards the canoe when all of a sudden(no word of a lie) the canoe took took off 5 feet into the air and flipped 3 times before it stopped! Good thing there wasn't any damage! No bugs to speak of, I guess the wind was to much for them. Friday evening turned out ok, we saw for the first time some blue sky and the wind calmed down. But that was short lived, during overnight the wind picked up and it of course started to rain once again. The plan was to wake up at 5am and head out to do some fishing. That didn't happen, looking out the tent it didn't take a genius to figure that we were better off sleeping in. Saturday was over cast all day, and the wind was up and down all day. Making the paddling really difficult. For dinner on Saturday we had 2 Bass and 2 Walleye, first time for Walleye and man is that a good tasting fish. After dinner we clean the camp up to avoid any visitors during the night(or so we thought) and down to the lake to wash up the dishes. What we didn't expect was the dozens and dozens of crayfish eating up some of the inners of the bass and walleye. So off to catching crayfish at 11:30pm for the morning bass fishing we had planned to do before heading home on the Sunday. So off to bed until about 5am to do some fishing, but it wasn't a quite evening by any means, oh no! At about 4am I hear this noise outside thinking it's Matt giving us a wakeup call. I woke up and said, "Ok, Ok. I'm up." I then heard Matt say, "That's not me". Matt looked out of the tent and saw that the jacket that was hung on our drying line was down on the ground. Then he realized that he had a granola bar in his jacket. Out he goes and throws the granola bar into the lake. Back into the tent he goes and we(Ed and I) asked if he had anything else, he couldn't recall having anything else. He then woke Mike(his deaf brother, who was still asleep through all this since he didn't hear anything) if he had any food, Mike said, "No, just the sealed cereal bag he had in his bag", Into the lake the cereal went as well. So after all that fun, you can only try and get some sleep again without trying to listen to every little noise you end up hearing in the bush, we can only hope it was just a raccoon that came to visit us that morning. I'm sure if it had been a black bear we would have known. About 1 1/2 hrs later we were on the lake trying to do some fishing. It was dead, not a single bite. 9am, pack up and head home.

The moral of this story. If you haven't camped before, always, and I do mean ALWAYS string your food into a tree and make sure it's away from any other branches or trees(Make sure it's a good 5-6 feet away from anything else and a good 10 ft above the ground). Oh and make sure it's a atleast 100 ft from camp.

Alright enough of my camping story, and back to technology. This week I'm going to try and finish off my $15US GPS unit. Yes folks you heard right, $15 GPS. Nothing fancy, no LCD display, but it works with any application that can use a GPS. How did I come about getting a $15 GPS, well a few months back I found one of the surplus stores in the US had a few dozen of these things(these are the SAME units that are used in GM's On*Star) vehicles. I'll post some pictures in the next few days. Sorry to say they sold out pretty fast. Also this week I hope to do that comparison of Netstumbler and Kismet.

I'll be off for a few days, going to spend a little time in the woods, camping and fishing. So I won't be able to demonstrate the differences between NetStumbler and Kistmet.
I might be doing some Wardriving on the way, it's a 5 hr drive. I need to get my internet fix! :)

Alright here's the application of the night. Like most of the applications I have found in the past few weeks. I found this one while just surfing around by accident.

ZXSniffer is the application in the spotlight. So what does it do?

Packet capture.
Shows network traffic: ICMP, IGMP, UDP, TCP.
Intercepts and decodes passwords of: POP3, FTP, ICQ, HTTP

I was able to test it on my own network and it worked as described.

Now that WWWD week is over what to do!? Humm, hey how about a Bull Fight yes your heard me right. A Bull Fight in Ontario! Located next to York Soaring Club(which btw looked like alot of fun). I spent a few hours up there, but the weather was just to sunny and HOT, felt like 38C in the little shade you could find.

On Terceira(Azores), summer festas often include a traditional bullfight. These "bullfights" resemble more a running of the bulls than the stereotypical bullfight with elaborately costumed matador. Islanders line the street, sitting on walls while gates and side streets are barricaded off. The bull, trailing a long rope, is released into the road and the braver (or more foolhardy) in the crowd test their mettle against the angry, confused bull. Unlike Spanish bullfights, the bull is not killed although sluggish villagers are often injured.

If you haven't figured it out yet. My family roots go back to the Azores.

Here is the latest update. I could have had a little more, unfortunately this morning on the drive to work I forgot to connect the GPS to the serial port on the laptop. The GPS was on, just not connected. :) oops.

So I backtracked my way home to redo the lost positions.

Overall I was able to get about 52 APs. WarDriving #9

Sometime next week I'm going to try something just to show the different between running a Active(Netstumbler) scanner and a Passive(Kismet) one.

All this week I have been using Netstumbler(NS) to grab all those AP's. Unlike Kismet, Netstumbler only displays AP's with SSID beacon turned on, and it 'sends' a request to the AP and waits for a reply. Once it does it logs that AP. Kismet on the other hand shows AP's even if the SSID beacon is turned off. Kismet only listens, and it does a good job at that. As you will see the difference next week.

Back from another evening out on the water, wind was consonantly changing directions. Either way it was a good race.

Alright back to what your all looking for, MORE WarDriving. I lost about 20 AP's this morning when the GPS batteries decided it was time to crap out. Nothing to exciting on this wardrive, one thing I did notice downtown Brampton had a REALLY good AP to WEP ration, we are talking like 85%(Wep) and 15%(open).(WarDriving #6)

Todays over all Drive: WarDriving #5
Along the Lake Shore, LOTS of Embassies in this area: WarDriving #7

Over all since the beginning of WWWD: WarDriving #8

If there are any Southern Ontario WarDrivers. PLEASE contact me ASAP. One thing I have noticed, is that on the 401(Around Person international Airport), as well as 403 and Eglinton seems like there is 802.11 along 401 and 403. Seems like the SSID (oh btw, no WEP) seems to start with the letter 'd' and then 3 or 4 digits, example "dbd46". The coverage is really good! We are talking like up to 2kms from the first time I started to pick up the AP until I lost it. Same SSID and MAC address. Come one GTA folks, contact me!

Fixed a small problem with the wardriving links. So they should work correctly now. It seemed to only effect Mozilla based browsers.

I'm back from the sail, next to no wind. But that's OK. It was fun as always.

The real fun began on my trek down to the sail club, I was amazed(or maybe I shouldn't) at the amount of AP's found on the way down, I found 90 AP's. On the way home it was up to 102, but then again I took a different route home.

Complete Drive: WareDriving#2
ParkLawn Area WareDriving#3
Drive into Club: WareDriving#4 as you will notice there are more then a few AP's in this area. Due to the fact there are atleast 5 Condo's in the area.

This wardrive was done using my Homemade Antenna

I just updated the WarDriving#1 map using Stumbverter

I'll be heading downtown Toronto this evening for a race(Sailing), so I'll take the laptop with me and see what we can find on the route downtown.
