Alright, here are those details. But first the pictures.

MMCX connector added to the coax

Base and connector

Completed #1

Before the hack

Two Antennas

Ready To go

Bolt #1

Bolt #2

Antennas side by side #1

Antennas side by side #1

Completed #2

basically I bought a cellular phones magnet mount antenna. Removed the end that was original came with the antenna, add the MMCX connector for the Orinico WiFi Card. Removed the original antenna, and built my own. The problem was trying to find a bolt that I could solider to. In this case I used a brass one, BUT it wasn't long enough. So I (Picture: Bolt#1 and Bolt#2) placed 3 bolts side by side and soldered them together, sorry I forgot to take pictures). I then solder on the antenna element onto the bolts.

Did the wardriving thing this morning for the drive to work(only 15mins) and a saw a BIG jump in how man Netstumbler was able to find compared to the Toothpick Antenna I had made. Picture1 and Picture #2. I would normally get about 50 AP's, today, I picked up 78, that's like 54% more!!

It was worth the time and little cash to put this thing together. Some will say why not buy one. Well, I'm in Canada, to bring anything from the US, you might as well add a good 60% on top of the US price. By the time you pay for the exchange rate, taxes, shipping, duties......... Plus I like to build my own.

If anyone is really readying all this blabla, email me and let me know.

Alright back to what this blog is all about, "HACKING". I'm talking about hardware hacking and doing things on the cheap!! In this weeks segment, cheap WiFi Antenna.

Living in a large city like Toronto, your always going to find surplus stores. You just never know what your going to find!! This weeks trip to Princessauto(for this in Canada have a look, they have a few locations). While looking in the surplus/electronics area, I found a cell phone antenna for 1800/1900 Mhz magmount antenna made by Mobile Power.
basically what my plan is to chop off the end connector. The element is alittle bigger then it should be for 2.4Ghz, but I'll deal with that later. I'll post some pictures for the before and after shot of what this thing looks like.

Btw. The Antenna cost me about $10US.
