Well here I am, at 7:30am on the train on my way to work and I'm posting this blog via my cell phone. Well, using my cell to connect to the internet. I was able last night for the first time to get this service to really work. I have a Rogers Cell plan with unlimited data. Well my drive last weekend was a major flop. Out of the 300 AP's it found, 200 were useless in the sense that those 200 didn't have any GPS info! So I'm not going to bother uploaded any maps. Not sure what happened. I think it might have been a bad solder job on the $20 GPS. I think I fixed it. So I'll make another run at it this long weekend on my 350Km drive north. Atleast it is in my area. I'm located just north west of Toronto. Power kicked back in at 5 am this morning, but have been warned to expect rolling poweroutages. I guess I was luck in that I only work 15min from home and I was on the road when the power went out and had a headstart on the road compared to others so the drive wasn't all that bad going home. With this worm on the loose there are allot of smart people out there reverse engineering this thing to figure out how it works. And the results are in, well at least the Kismet results. I'm a day behind schedule. This morning on the drive to work I ran Kismet and found a grand total of about 73 AP's in a 15 min. drive. I believe this number could be a little higher had Kismet been able to scan more then 1-2 channels ever second. Unlike Netstumbler where it seems that it can scan about 5 or more channels per second. YAHOO, no not Yahoo, Kismet released a few days back version 3, while at work I compiled the new version on my laptop and ran a few tests and no crashing or hanging! So onto the road test on my way to the weekly sailing race and the thing worked flawlessly! For the first time, at least for me. Alright here it is, the $20Cdn($15 US) GPS. I've taken a few photos, sorry about some of them being a little out of focus I don't have a tripod. As I've written before, this GPS is the same one found in some of GM's vehicles with the OnStar system. The units are manufactured by Motorola(they are the Microsoft of the electronics world). Here is the latest update. I could have had a little more, unfortunately this morning on the drive to work I forgot to connect the GPS to the serial port on the laptop. Well Field Day 2003 is over and done with. The conditions were just awful! But what can you do it's mother nature. Weather wasn't that bad, but the mosquitoes were! :) My attempt at wiring up the Field Day grounds ending up being a flop! I guess what can you expect when your trying to do everything last minute. I have looked around at a few options and have found one that runs off a bootable CD (much like Knoppix-STD), and the others either require some funky hardware or my AP isn't supported.
